Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, who commanded the American fleet at Midway, knew better than many what had actually taken place, and he assessed it accurately when he said, “After a battle is over, people talk a lot about how the decisions were methodically reached, but actually there’s always a hell of a lot of groping around” (Lord, Incredible Victory, 87).
